These carts were used to transport wood and fabrics within the mills. These vintage carts are now surfacing on the retail furniture market for use as coffee tables and accent pieces; similar to the popular antique oak icebox of the 1970's. With access to closed furniture and textile factories in western North Carolina, The Dovetail has the ability to restore these carts and offer them for sale.
Available in Fully Restored or Unfinished Condition:
These carts were
predominantly made of white oak although it's not uncommon to find secondary
wood on the top surface which was likely replaced due to wear and tear of
decades of use. If you wish to purchase a finished cart, The Dovetail will
not replace any boards on the cart in an effort to enhance or change its
original appearance. You will receive a chart as it appeared on the
factory floor at the end of its life. Look closely at the pictures and you
can see the natural imperfections in the wood (i.e. cracks, rough edges).
If you purchase a finished cart, we pressure wash the boards and casters, then apply a black stain to all the wheels, casters and axles. Finally, all boards get numerous applications of our premium lacquer finish. We do not apply any wood stain to the cart. We discovered that any stain only further darkens the wood and detracts from the original appearance as it was used on the factory floor.

The
Dovetail is now offering a piece of North Carolina history from its furniture
and textile factories of the past. Many of these carts, known as furniture
factory carts, were manufactured in North Wilksboro, North Carolina in the early
1900's and distributed to factories across the country.
We
can offer the opportunity to purchase a cart in either natural and unrestored
state, whereby you'll enjoy the experience of seeing your cart come to life and
save a considerable amount of money. Or you can buy a fully restored
finished product.
